Three weeks back I brought my pair of shih tzus to the vet for a distemper vaccination. George weighs in at 19 and a half pounds and Eve and 16 and half lbs. What astuounds me is that they get so energized departing to meet their vet, they adore everybody fawning all over them. Eve insisted on moving in first by evoking such a bustle, George followed with his tail between his legs.
George was the first in and barked on his way out after the veteran took a look at him, he was the most happy dog in the world. Then it all went horribly wrong Eve started to throw up all the contents in her stomach. Our shih tzu laid down and wouldn't move. We were obviously worried at this stage and all we could do was wait and expect the best. Eve was in a terrible condition and didnt know what to do, it was like looking at an elephant being shot and losing control of its legs slowly but surely.
When the vet noticed what was around he hurried to his cabinet to get some steroids for our shitzu. Only time would inform whether this would have the preferred outcome on the vaccination she had been given. The rate of her breathing was hit and miss sometimes it was fast sometimes it was slow. We rushed her to a specialty infirmary where she was admitted in grave condition There was only so much John could do so we brought her to a special hospital for pets. The next 24 hours were important and we didnt know if she would recover the night.
The dog clinic took very good care of her and made sure she got her intravenous drip and oxygen as well. I dont believe the lovely people in the clinic thought our shih tzu dog would do well but we were positive that it would all end up for the best. Tender loving care as well as the hospital drugs were her stable diet for 4 days whilst there. This reply to the injection caused her to go into shock, along with swelling and bleeding in her stomach and intestines. The good news is that she is making great footsteps forward in her recuperation.
She drinks her water and likes to sleep more than before but I can only imagine this is because the whole experience was so harrowing for her. I think she will come to a full recovery with time. I have come to learn a lot about these injections over this last week.
The shih tsu breed are most effected by these forms of injections actually and it is not that strange .I am on a bit of campaign now to make sure people manage to obtain "full disclosure".It really cost us a lot of money we could ill afford to spend however we would do anything for our dog.I dont recommend anybody goes through this like we had to.
